Job Profile

As the central bank of India, the RBI plays a crucial role in shaping the nation’s monetary policies and maintaining financial stability.

RBI Grade B officers are on probation for the initial 2 years but during the entire tenure, the officers are deployed across various departments within the RBI, such as:

  • Banking Regulation and Supervision
  • Currency Management
  • Monetary Policy
  • Research and Analysis
  • Administration and Human Resources

Basically, an officer is the backbone of RBI and the main responsibility is to ensure the compliance of the banks with various Acts such as Banking Regulation Act, 1949, Anti-Money Laundering Act etc.

They may also be deputed to other financial institutions, government agencies, or international organizations for specialized assignments or training programs.

Salary and Career progression

Salary and Perks: RBI Grade B officers enjoy competitive pay scales and numerous benefits, including:

  • Basic Pay: The initial monthly gross emoluments for RBI Grade B officers are approximately INR 77,208.
  • Allowances: In addition to the basic pay, officers receive Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Local Compensatory Allowance, Family Allowance, and Grade Allowance.
  • Perquisites: Medical benefits, leave fare concession, and loans at concessional rates are provided.
  • Pension: RBI Grade B officers are entitled to a pension as per the government norms

The overall CTC in a metro city will be around 17-18LPA which is quite good for any entry level exam.

Yes, you’ve read it correctly! A Grade-B Officer can reach upto the level of Deputy Governor/ Governor also but the promotions are based on performance, experience, and clearing departmental exams. Officers may also get opportunities for lateral movements and specialized training programs.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the RBI Grade B exam, candidates need to meet certain criteria regarding age, educational qualifications, and nationality. Here are the general eligibility requirements:

  1. Nationality:

    • The candidate must be a citizen of India, or
    • A subject of Nepal, or
    • A subject of Bhutan, or
    • A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India
  2. Age Limit:

    • The minimum age limit for the RBI Grade B exam is typically 21 years.
    • The maximum age limit varies depending on the category and educational qualifications. It is generally around 30 years for general category candidates. However, age relaxations are provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories as per government norms.
  3. Educational Qualifications

    • The candidate should have a minimum of 60% marks (50% in case of SC/ST/PWD) or an equivalent grade in Bachelor’s degree as well as in 12th (or Diploma or equivalent) and 10th standard examinations.
Structure

RBI Grade B Exam Structure: The RBI Grade B exam is conducted in three phases:

  1. Phase 1: Preliminary Examination

    • Objective-type questions covering subjects like General Awareness, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning.
    • Each section carries equal weightage.
    • Negative marking for incorrect answers.
  2. Phase 2: Main Examination

    • Consists of three papers:
      • Economic and Social Issues
      • English (Writing Skills)
      • Finance and Management
    • Descriptive-type questions to test the candidate’s analytical skills and understanding of economic and financial concepts.
  3. Interview

    • Candidates who clear both Phase 1 and Phase 2 are called for the interview round.
    • The interview panel assesses the candidate’s personality, communication skills, and suitability for the role.
