The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Officer Grade A (Assistant Manager) Exam is one of the most prestigious examinations for individuals aspiring to enter the world of securities markets in India. SEBI, the regulatory body for securities markets in India, conducts this examination annually to recruit Assistant Managers across various streams such as General, Legal, Information Technology, Engineering (Civil & Electrical), Research, and Official Language.

Job Profile

As per the transfer and placement policy of SEBI, employees may be posted to different departments / offices and assigned work on areas ranging from policy formulation to intermediary registration, inspection, supervision, investigation, adjudication, etc. The job profile of an employee is also dependent upon the stream opted at the time of recruitment.

Salary of SEBI Officer Grade-A (Assistant Manager)

The selected candidate will be getting an overall CTC of around 17 LPA which is quite good for any entry level job.

Career Progression

The organisational hierarchy of SEBI is as given in the picture. Officers are classified as Grade A to Grade F (i.e. A : Assistant Manager, B : Manager, C : Assistant General Manager, D : Deputy General Manager, E : General Manager, F : Chief General Manager) in SEBI. An officer in a particular Grade becomes eligible for promotion to next higher Grade on completion of minimum stipulated years of service in that Grade. Promotion up to the post of Assistant General Manager is non-vacancy based and subsequent promotions are vacancy based. Officers in Grade F can rise up to the post of Executive Director. Positions above Executive Director (i.e Whole Time Member and Chairman) are filled by the Government of India, on contractual basis.

Pattern of Exam

The SEBI Grade A Exam consists of three phases:

  1. Phase I: Preliminary Examination: This phase is an online examination consisting of multiple-choice questions (MCQs). It generally includes subjects such as:

    • General Awareness
    • English Language
    • Quantitative Aptitude
    • Reasoning Ability

    The duration of the Phase I exam is usually 120 minutes.

  2. Phase II: Main Examination: The Main Examination is also conducted online and consists of two papers:

    • Paper I: It comprises MCQs based on subjects like Economic & Social Issues, Finance & Management, and Securities Market. The duration is typically 40 minutes.

    • Paper II: It consists of descriptive questions covering subjects related to the stream chosen by the candidate. The duration may vary depending on the stream.

  3. Phase III: Interview: Candidates who qualify in Phase II are called for an interview. The interview panel assesses the candidates’ knowledge, skills, attitude, and suitability for the Assistant Manager position.
